It was my first time to go to Boracay, so I was looking forward to 2 things: the beach and the food. I was really looking forward to lots and lots of seafood on my short stay on the island.

Our flight out of Manila is around 11AM and by the time we got to the island, it was already past 3PM and by the time we got out of our room after unpacking our things, it was already 5PM. I was really very hungry and very much looking forward to the late lunch and early dinner. So we started walking on the beach looking for a restaurant to try.

The resto where we had our disappointing lunch.

After walking for a few minutes, we chanced upon one of the restaurants along the beach, I think its name was La Luna. We ordered grilled shrimp and tuna, but I think it was not one of the best days of the of the restaurant because the food they served us were very disappointing. The shrimp was bland and the tuna was as hard as a beef. I actually tried for a number of times to slice the tuna with the usual table knife, but it was really as hard as beef that I gave up eventually. I only ate a bite size off the tuna and I never finished the food. It cost us around P900 for the food which definitely was not worth it. But in fairness, the staff were friendly and courteous, but the food was really disappointing.

The bland grilled prawns

The tuna that was very hard to slice

To add insult to our disappointed stomachs, while we were walking back to our hotel, we saw a lot of eat-all-you-can buffet for P250-300 a person. Our P900 would have gone a long way with those buffets.

And because we were still hungry we opted for dinner at Mang Inasal and had some celebrity sightings: Red Lady Gawgaw and the headless Liberty.

Celebrity Sightings: The Red Lady Gawgaw and the Headless Liberty

Because of our experience on the first day of our stay, on lunch the next day we avoided the seafood restaurants and went for run-of-the-mill menu at Shakey’s. We ordered Seafood Marinara and Chicken (again) and Mojos for my kid (my kid only knows 3 types of food; noodles, sinigang and chicken).

Seafood Marinara at Shakey's

For dinner on our second day, we tried the buffet at La Carmela for P250. The price included the eat-all-you-can buffet and a one time serving of mongolian barbecue. The price was worth it and the food was good for the fill, but none of the dishes really caught my attention.

D' Talipapa

On the last day, we tried the restaurants at D’ Talipapa and really got our “gas tanks” filled up to the brim with seafood. I bought a lobster for P1000 (less than a kilo), 3 kilos of oyster at P30 per kilo, and half a kilo of shirmps (no tiger prawns on that day, just medium sized shrimps). The restaurant cooked the food for us ( I forgot the name of the resto), we had lobster in chili sauce, buttered shrimp and butter-garlic grilled oyster.

Lobster in Chili Sauce makes up for my disappointing first day

Buttered Shrimp

Butter Garlic Grilled Oyster

The lunch cost us around P2000, but I think it’s worth the fill. I actually overbought the oyster and shrimp that we had a hard time finishing them, so we had to take-out what was left.

The first day was disappointing, but the last day made up for all our disappointments.

My family and I were at Boracay last Christmas, and while strolling on the beach we chanced upon the booth for the Zorb. The first time I saw the Zorb was on one of the challenges from the Amazing Race series in New Zealand, then afterwards a company started one in Boracay and it got featured in Trip na Trip and Sports Unlimited.

It looked kinda fun the first time I saw it on TV, so since we had the opportunity, we did try it out.

The actual site for the Zorb is at Ilig-Iligan, Brgy Yapak. They have a pick-up point at the Budget Mart at D’Mall where a multicab would bring you to the site. The ride to the site is free and travel time is around 15 to 20 mins, it takes you way beyond Alta Vista de Boracay. The last 5 mins of the ride is actually a bumpy one as paved road does not reach the Zorb site.

Upon reaching the site, you register at the big nipa hut and get to sign some waiver just in case the Zorb ball gets ballistic and throws you out on its way down.

There are actually 2 types of Zorb ball, one is where the ball is filled-up with water and you just slide inside the ball as it rolls down the hill, while the other ball is where you get strapped on the inner walls and get spun around as you go downhill.

The downhill path for the Zorb is located just beside the registration area and it has a length of about 50 meters. My first reaction when I saw the pathway was “ang ikli naman, parang di sulit”. When it was featured on TV it seemed longer than what was in front of my eyes. But actually, even if it seems short, when you are inside the ball rolling downhill, it would seem like an hour of fun.

At first I prepared myself inside the ball to face the downhill pathway, but as the ball started to gain momentum, I was spun around and I ended up facing the top of the hill and my shorts slowly being pulled down by the ball’s rolling movement. I was actually worried that towards the end of the ride, my shorts would be spinning around the ball with me so I was holding to my shorts like my life depended on it.

After the Zorb ride, you just get to chill-out and talk about your experience as you wait for the multicab to arrive to bring you back to the beach area. When we were there, they were only using 1 multicab to transport the guests to and from D’Mall, we had a longer waiting time, so I suggest you bring with you an extra shirt or a towel to keep you warm while waiting for the ride.

Price for the Zorb depends on the number of persons. The water-filled Zorb ball is cheaper and can accommodate 3 persons at a time (price @ 300 each for 3 persons; 380 each for 2 persons; 580 if you’re the only rider). The other Zorb ball with the straps can only accommodate 2 persons and I think it costs the same as the water filled Zorb.

Kenny Rankin died of lung cancer

Kenny who? The name just rang a tiny bell in my mind and the first thing that came into my mind was Chicken Roasters and the unit of temperature we get to convert from Kelvin in grade school science class.

Kenny Rankin's website www.kennyrankin.com

The name sounds familiar, but I can’t remember where I’ve heard the name. So I Googled my way to finding out who Kenny Rankin was and then I remembered his name from the Jingle magazine I had circa 1980′s. Probably most of us do not know him, but if you heard his songs, you’d get the same “ahhh…sya pala yun!” reaction just like I did.

Kenny Rankin popularized songs such as “On and On” (on and on…she just keeps on trying..), the ever famous national anthem for closet queens “Hiding Inside Myself” (so I hid inside…Till I almost died..yes I hid inside and I cried), and one of the famous contender to the ultimate Boyfriend-Girlfriend theme song “What matters most” (…what matters most is that we loved at all…)

I grew up listening to a couple of his songs and sometimes in a weird way, those songs that you grew up with gets embedded in your subconscious and becomes part of your childhood memories. And you somehow feel a sense of losing a part of yourself when someone that you grew up with passes away, even if you are not really related to the person. It’s like saying Big Bird died of A(H1N1) to the Gen “W” (and a couple of Gen X) kids who grew up watching Sesame Street.

Which is more pleasing to hear: I Googled Bing… OR …I Binged Google?

This is how I Binged Google

Microsoft, in its bid to capture the search engine market, lauched its repackaged search engine, Live Search, which is now called Bing. The Microsoft focus group came up with the name Bing, because according to them, it was short, memorable, easy to spell and it would function well as a URL around the world (what the hell does that mean?). But I think they forgot to consider that it doesn’t sound good when used as a verb. Google’s rise to fame can also be attributed to the fact that its name is being used as a verb in everyday conversation which is why it made its way to everyone’s vocabulary. I’m not so sure if the same would work well for Bing.

Philippine Independence Day Google Logo

This is the first time I've seen Google put up a special logo for the Philippine Independence Day celebration

Google is known to add pizzazz to their already very colorful trademarked logo for every significant event within a year. I’ve seen it change for Christmas, Halloween, and even to celebrate the Beijing Olympics. But this is the first time I’ve seen it change for the Philippine Independence Day Celebration. Probably not everyone saw this, but if you went to the dotph URL for Google (www.google.com.ph), you’d get to see their logo change to add the Philippine Flag. Cool!

Map of Gulf of Aden and Somali coast with positions of the hijacked ships

“Manila, Philippines – In response to the increasing number of Filipino hostages in Somalia, the Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the Philippine Navy to go after the Somali pirates on the high seas of the Gulf of Aden. The flag-officer-in-command of the Philippine Navy has commissioned three Philippine Navy destroyers to proceed to the Gulf of Aden and engage the Somali pirates.”

How I wish that was the headline in CNN and BBC, but unfortunately, we’re sitting ducks in this situation. The Filipinos are at the losing end in every which way you look at it. We have an ill-equipped Philippine Navy, so don’t even count on the possibility of dreaming a daring high seas rescue.

We are not only at the mercy of the Somali pirates but we’re also at the mercy of the ship operators. If they decide to scuttle the ransom negotiations because they cannot afford the ransom, then woe to us and the crew’s family.

We are even at the mercy of international news agencies. How many times have you heard updates about the US cargo ship captain held hostage by the Somali? Then think about how many times have you heard updates about 100 plus Filipino ship crew hostages? The saddest thing is, even our local news channels doesn’t report much on the fate of the Filipino crews. There is not much effort on their part to deliver the news to the nation. I could remember that during the recent Iraq or Afghanistan wars (I could not remember which of the two), each local network even had their “contingent” news team to deliver on site updates and documentaries. On that situation, the Philippines doesn’t even have any “interest” at the ongoing wars, they just wanted to out do each other and have the bragging rights of “delivering service through news and information, even in dangerous situations”. Well, here’s a challenge to both networks, send some one over to Kenya or Yemen and gather info about the situation of the Filipino crews (I’m not even suggesting Somalia) and deliver service to the Filipino people that really matters, since the international news agencies doesn’t care much about the 100 plus Filipino hostages.

The only thing we can do now is just pray for the welfare of the Filipino crew and hopefully everything ends well for each of them.

Oh, an idea just came into my mind. If everything else fails, let’s rig a fleet of Ro-Ro’s with explosives and send them crashing to the Somali pirate’s ports and blow the smithereens out of them.

=====
Just an anecdote about Seamen:
I was once assigned to support one of our clients at Riga, Latvia, a Baltic State and formerly part of the U.S.S.R. I arrived at the Riga airport and waited in line at the customs and immigration desk for the usual question and answer portion of your travel.

The immigration officer, upon seeing my Philippine passport asked me in broken Russian-English tone, “So you’re Philippines right?”.

Of course I answered “Yes”, not really knowing if he was asking if I came from the Philippines or if I am a Filipino. It didn’t matter which of the two he meant to ask, coz I would reply Yes to either question.

The officer then gave a follow-up question… “Semen?”

I was dumb founded for a few seconds and didn’t know what to answer. I was thinking, this was a former Soviet state, who knows what they would make me do.

Thankfully, the officer upon seeing my blank reaction, rephrased his question, “Are you a ‘Semen’?”

I then got what he was asking and replied, “No, not a seaman. I’m a programmer. I work with computers”

Here is a classic sample of an Erap adage, ‘Don’t judge a book if you are not a judge’.

The clip is from the first episode of Britain Got Talent 2009, where Susan Boyle, a 47 yr old woman made a surprising display of talent. Honestly, when I saw this clip, I was thinking that this is probably one of those type of viral clips like the Bulgarian Idol who sang the “Ken Lee” by Mariah Carey. But unlike that performance, Susan Boyle’s performance is an ‘In your face!’ type of performance. Go click the play button and watch for yourself.

This is an excerpt of a blog entry at Zoe Grapho’ s blogsite (http://hazelsheryllchua.blogspot.com/2009/03/help-for-aj.html)

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Help For AJ

Help for AJ
This is an attempt to disseminate information to get more people to pray for my niece who has cancer/leukemia.

Alleah Janine Reambillo, we call her AJ, was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 2001, she was nine years old at that time, a smart little girl who loves to draw and color and a consistent honor student in our local grade school. She went on remission with the help of oral medications (Glivec by Novartis) and in October of last year, her doctors gave her the permission to fly to Singapore for a final round of tests before they can give her a complete clearance.

She was supposed to fly with her dad this summer after she graduates from high school on April 3, she is also supposed to receive awards for being a student journalist and for being the school’s Ms. Alma Mater. Unfortunately, three weeks ago, my niece had high fever and my mom saw some bruises on her legs and arms again. She was rushed to the hospital and after a round of tests, it was discovered that something triggered the cancer to recur and it has mutated, it has become non-responsive to Glivec and from CML, it looks like it has now turned into Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She is still confined at the Fe del Mundo Children’s Medical Center Foundation in Banawe St., Quezon City as of this writing.

[read more at Zoe Grapho]
===========

It doesn’t need much effort to help her niece. If you are a blogger, you can do 2 things to help her, write a post about her to help disseminate her story and hopefully someone who has info or resources available would get to read your post and second, you can say a prayer for her recovery. Two small things, doesn’t cost anything and doesn’t require much effort, but can definitely give her a chance.

====
Update: Mar 30, 2009

Message from Hazel:

I just want to add that we are also looking for people who would be interested in donating blood to help us lessen the bill. They can just go to Fe del Mundo Hospital along Banawe Ave., Quezon City and just tell them that you are donating blood for Alleah Janine, the leukemia patient at Room Waling Waling. And since you are already there, why not go and take a peek in her room na din? She can be shy at first, but it will really brighten her up to know that there are a lot of people who cares.

Flash Mob: a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The organization of flash mobs is generally accepted as being limited to the social media or viral emails, rather than organized by public relations firms or for a stunt. Also flash mobs are not politically or commercially motivated as described by Bill Wasik’s in where he said, they serve no purpose (wikipedia)

Recently I’ve been very much entertained watching flash mob videos in YouTube after watching a T-mobile flash mob gig. Though technically, based on the flash mob definition, this is not a flash mob because it was a stunt for a T-mobile ad, but nonetheless it was very much entertaining. As the music progress you can see more and more people “joining” the dance

The following videos are certified flash mob videos, not a stunt for a TV commercial, and all of them conceptualized by Improv EveryWhere

In this video a group of 70 people “hijacked” the window display of a department store and started an animated display.

How would you react if suddenly all the passengers inside the MRT or LRT started to remove their pants?

This is probably the most challenging flash mob activity.

And lastly free musical show at the food court

Flash Mob in the Philippines

Tried to search for a flash mob event in the Philippines and found these videos for Wrangler and Greenwich. Technically these are not flash mobs since they were made as a gig for commercial establishments.

Wrangler Mob:

Barong, Gowns Galore,Telang per-yarda at Baby Things

New Divisoria Center (Sta. Elena corner Tabora st.)

Elena ang New Divisoria Center.

School Supplies at Novelty Items

Getting ready for the rain?

Fresh Fruits, Gulay, Fishda, Junk Foods at iba pa

Tabora st.: Lace, Ribbons, Handicrafts, Sewing Supplies

Native Handicrafts, Figurines, Decors at Souvenirs

Kolorete, ipit at tali sa buhok, suklay, blush-on at kyutiks

It’s like a “Kikay’s Heaven you know!” .
